Scope and Contents

The collection contains not only Lillian Burns' records, but also archival materials from families who donated their items to Burns for her safekeeping. Among the records are a series of photo slides Lillian used for historical lectures, records from the history of Historic Spanish Point, records from the Historical Society of Sarasota County, materials from Burns' involvement with outside organizations like the Crowley Nature Center and Alliance for Historic Preservation, materials collected by Neal Chapline, photo albums and a scrapbook (five volumes total) from the Cole Family (including DeForest Cole), the Dorothy Kahle McDaniel photo album, the Palmer-Webb photo album (mostly images from Spanish Point and Meadowsweet Pastures), the Pelot Family photo album (including photos of the Pelots, World War I planes, Sunset Park, Crescent Beach, etc.), the prime Family photo album (including photos of the George B. Prime house, Braden Castle, Myakka River State Park, etc.), and Lillian Burns' personal papers and subject files. There is also a series of records from the Higel Family, especially from Gordon Higel. There is also a collection of records relating to Rosemary Cemetery--specifically material associated with the project to rehabilitate and preserve the cemetery. Collection also contains city directories and telephone books and a notebook from the Bay Island Civil Defense Committee.

This collection is stored offsite in a remote storage facility. Materials from the collection can be brought to the Sarasota County History Center for viewing upon request. Please contact the Sarasota County History Center by phone at 941-861-6090 or by email at historycenter@scgov.net at least three business days before your visit to ensure the material will be available when you arrive.
