Scope and Contents
This collection contains business and professional records collected by Commissioner John M. Saba, Jr. During his tenure on the Sarasota County Board of County Commissioners. Records included in the collection are planning, zoning, and ordinace studies, drafts of proposals and plans, expenditure reports and other documentation. Topics covered by these documents are land development, zoning conflicts and proposals, ordinances regarding the Sarasota County Comprehensive Plan and utilities rates of various companies.

Biographical / Historical
John Maure Saba, Jr. was born in 1937 to John Maure Saba, Sr. and Gwendoline Atkinson. Saba Jr. has five brothers: William, Ronald, Richard, Donald and Bruce. The family came to Sarasota in the mid to late 1940s. While in Sarasota, Saba, Jr. attended Southside Elementary School and later Sarasota High School. He attended Stetson University where he majored in law and business. Saba, Jr. married Marilyn Mae Moller in 1959 at the First Presbyterian Church in Sarasota. He and some of his siblings would work with their father on the family business, Saba’s Home Furnishings, once located at 1055 South Tamiami Trail. Commissioner Saba, Jr. served as a Sarasota County Commissioner for District No. 4 from 1971-1981. His father also served as Sarasota County Commissioner from 1956-1957.
