This collection contains Barbara Smith’s research and reference materials on African American history in Sarasota, FL. Historical topics of interest included are Sarasota cemeteries (Galilee, Rosemary, and Oaklands/Woodlawn), African American community pioneers, and general articles pertaining to the African American community of the Sarasota area. Within this collection there is a copy of “Newtown Alive – Newtown: Past and Present 1914-2014". This document explores several aspects of African American culture, history, and progress in the Sarasota area while also stressing the importance of maintaining the historic district of Newtown, Sarasota.
