Higel Family Collection
Scope and Contents
Family and professional papers of the Harry Higel family, most dating from the mid-20th century, although a few items date from as far back as the 1850s. Included are records from Harry Higel's mayoral career (1911-1913) and re-election appeal (1917); documents from Gertrude Higel (1925-1935); private letters from Louise Higel; a booklet about Siesta Key with introduction by Harry Higel; Higel family financial papers; articles written by Gordon Higel; materials relating to the postal history of Sarasota; brochure from the Bay Island Hotel; a family scrapbook; and materials relating to the Whitaker Family Cemetery, the Palmer National Bank, the Sarasota Art Association, the Florida West Coast Symphony, New College, the Sarasota County chapter of the American Red Cross, the Sarasota YMCA, etc. Also included are menus from local restaurants, clip sheets from the local post office, clip sheets relating to the history of Sarasota, etc.

This collection is stored offsite in a remote storage facility. Materials from the collection can be brought to the Sarasota County History Center for viewing upon request.
