Biographical / Historical

The Englewood Water District (EWD) was established in 1958. EWD is a water reclamation facility located at 201 Selma Ave, Englewood, FL 34223. Since the town of Englewood is within the limits of both Sarasota County and Charlotte County, the EWD services the residents and businesses located in both. The establishment of the EWD was based on the community’s growing concern with the chances of a typhoid epidemic due to the fast-growing population in the 1950s. Contamination of well water because of septic tank effluent added to the residents’ concerns. Community representatives brought forth the concerns to Sarasota County Commissioner, urging for a water and sewer district.

Former Board of Supervisors Chairman, Dr. Gottlieb Bernhard Fehmerling, Jr. implemented higher standards for laboratory testing that are still practiced by the EWD. The laboratory is certified to conduct lead and copper testing. The laboratory was named in his honor in 1993.

Former District Board Director, Paul Phillips, helped drive the decision to lay public sewers throughout the area the EWD directly serves in the mid-1990s. This project was known as the Septic Tank Abandonment Program. In 2005, the Paul J. Phillips Water Reclamation Facility was named after the Director in commemoration of his work for the Englewood community.
